A perfect complementary spice to many dishes. Many recognize it for its presence in holiday baked goods, but nutmeg is also frequently found in sweet potatoes and squashes, barbecue rubs, and sauces. A pinch of nutmeg improves most dishes and like mace, nutmeg has flavor binding capabilities. Add to cheese dishes, potato au gratin, Shepherd’s pie and rum punch. Try nutmeg in root vegetable purees such as parsnips, carrots or roasted squash.

Try this spice whole to see why pre-ground nutmeg can’t compare. Fresh ground is incomparably much better, and grinding your own is easy to do using a mill, grater or microplane. As a member of what is known as ‘the sweet spice quartet’—nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice—it carries a fragrance induced nostalgia for many.
